As with any software, you often get what you pay for.

There are a number of free screencasting tools available on the Internet and many computers come with screencasting tools built in (more on that below). Before going to the tools, there are a few things you may consider: Free vs. In the sections below, you'll see that I recommend a few options based on my research. There is a large variety of screencasting tools, both free and paid. You can see why this is kind of tool is so central to creating Explainer GIFs: screencasting allows us to quickly make a video from anything that happens on our screen. Screencasting is a fundamental part of creating ExplainerGIFs. If you are new to screencasting, the short Common Craft video below will give you important context on what screencasting is and how it is used. If this is your best option, create a video and go to the next section to convert your video to an animated GIF. Use (File -> Export to -> Quicktime) to create the video.

The quality is poor and in my experience, it doesn't work well with animations. While PowerPoint can technically create a video from a presentation (File -> Save As Movie) I don't recommend it.This may be an option if you don't have screencasting tools. Please note: It is possible to use PowerPoint or Keynote to save a presentation as a video file. When editing is finished, we'll create an animated GIF, or ExplainerGIF.Once recorded, the animation can be edited and manipulated. When the animation plays, we'll record what is on the computer screen using screencasting tools. We'll use Powerpoint to "play" the animation on the screen. There are a number of ways to do this, but they all have a few things in common: These are only some of the tools we use at Wildbit, but they are definitely the most important ones. Now that we've created a simple animation in PowerPoint, we need to capture that animation and turn it into an animated GIF. - This is a bit more resource demanding than Gatling and is ideal for testing from more than one machine.- This is an open-source testing tool, ideal for testing from a single machine. We care a lot about the performance of our products at Wildbit, a couple of our favorite performance testing tools are: Faraday - This is the HTTP client that we use for API automation tests. It provides an elegant solution for modeling your webpages. Page-object - If you've worked in QA for very long, you've probably heard of this one.MailHandler - We built this gem to power our testing for sending and receiving email, along with capturing information about delivery.Pry - This alternative to Ruby IRB shell is an essential part of writing our automated tests. In order to make testing easier, we use many paid web apps too. This is really handy if I want to see whether or not I can save a webhook returning a 500 error.

The return http code (in this case 500) depends on what you enter. If you call with an API, it will return a 500 error. - We use this when we want to test something like invalid webhooks. This tool needs to be setup locally, however if you would like to use a public tool, you can use. The difference is JSONLint provides better errors when you validate larger JSON data sets. - At first glance, this tool might look similar to the JSON parser I mentioned earlier. We use it a lot to generate JSON when we're writing API tests. Copy your JSON and paste it into instantly parse it as a string and get a JS evaluation. We use this tool almost daily, especially testing Postmark. - This tool includes all sorts of conversions, character sets, and response tests that would take up a ton of time if you needed to generate them on your own all the time.

Some of the most valuable for us testers are: There are a lot of free online tools which are awesome and very easy to use. There is a big community building additional workflow integrations, so someone may have built the workflow you need already if it doesn't support the task you need out of the box. There's a free version and a paid version that includes the ability to build and use custom workflows. It's awesome because it makes it easy to carry out tasks without leaving your keyboard.
